Getting your child a toddler bed or a twin bed depends mainly upon the age of your child. The child’s age is the huge factor that you need to consider before you make the decision. The parents need to make this decision at some point in their life and have many factors to consider.

So what exactly is a toddler bed and twin bed?

A toddler bed is specially designed small bed for toddlers. These beds are designed to be lower to the ground that would facilitate easy entry and exit for your child. They also come with a railing for further safety. The toddler beds size range from 70 centimetres (28 in) x 140 centimetres (55 in) to 78 centimetres (31 in) x 180 centimetres (71 in). These beds are suitable for kids that are more than 18 months to 3 years of age.

A twin bed is a single bed that can be used as a single bed for the child. These beds do not have any type of railings and are an actual good choice if your child is above the age of 4 years. The twin beds are practical and can be used for a longer period of time. The size of the Twin bed is 99 centimeters (39 in) x 190.5 centimeters (75 in) that is the same as the size of a single bed.

Nowadays, you will easily get a crib that would convert into a toddler bed as the child grows. It comes with three height variations and is sturdy and safe. The conversion from crib to toddler bed to an independent twin bed helps your child to be one with space and hence they should not experience sudden change. Advantages of choosing crib cum toddler beds:

  1. Best to fit in a small space and room.
  2. Provides more room for the play
  3. The mattress can be used throughout.
  4. They prove to be a cozy space for the child according to ApartmentTherapy.

The major disadvantage is that the child can use the toddler bed only till a certain age. Parents usually let their kids be in the toddler bed until 6 years of age but the toddler bed could be out of use even earlier.

At a certain age (almost over 4 or 5 years) your child will feel that the space of the toddler bed would be less. There are chances that the child can jump out even if the railings are up – this is the sign that your child needs a twin bed. Having a crib cum toddler bed makes it easy for the child to transition to a twin bed. The twin bed is a great choice for your growing child. Also, if you have two kids, there can be two twin beds that would provide them with their sense of space and comfort.

Also, consider the following factors before you make your decision:

1.    The willingness of your child

Not every kid is the same. Some children find it easy to shift from a crib to a bed while some would create a fuss. If your child is ready they would show signs that the toddler bed is now hindering is growth or play area. It is best not to push your child towards transition, let them slowly adapt. Some kids are comfortable in a toddler bed until the age of 6 years as well.

2.    Independence

A twin bed is higher than the toddler bed. Your child needs to be of a height to reach the bed comfortably. Also, they should develop the ability to use the twin bed independently. Before buying a twin bed, it is best to check the mattress base height from the ground. Different twin beds have different sizes, an essential aspect to scout before finalizing the bed for your child.

3.     Bed railings

Bed railings are an important aspect of your child’s safety. The rails are present in the crib cum toddler beds, which prevents your child from rolling off the bed. This one safety aspect you must never overlook. If you plan to directly buy a twin bed then you surely must invest in bed rails to prevent your child from any harm. All baby décor stores would have varieties of options that you could look from.

4.     Practicality

Some parents decide towards the practicality of having a bed. A child might surpass the use of toddler bed sooner than you know. The toddler bed is used only in the early stage of their life and cannot be used further unless a new baby is on the way. But depending upon the development of your child you should choose to invest in either a toddler bed or twin bed.

In conclusion, whatever decision you take always keep the child’s safety, security, and comfort in mind. Not every child develops at the same speed as others. They grow at their own pace. You know your child better than anyone else. Observe and understand their requirement. Judge every possibility, weigh the highlights and challenges and choose the best for your child.
