How to Give New Life to Your Old Wood Furniture
Estimate the cost of your home renovationEstimate
Every furniture after a while gets old. Having old furniture is a really bad feeling, especially if you have guests coming over. Most of them are still comfortable but they just look bad. So, changing all your furniture just to look good is not a cheap solution. It will cost you a lot of money and effort. But fortunately there is a cheaper solution which of course will take more effort, but at least you can use the money you wanted to use for furniture somewhere else.
One of the biggest reason why furniture looks old is that their color just starts to vanish, there’s a lot of dust on them, and maybe you have seen the same furniture with the same color every day and now it just looks bad and boring.
But what can you do…
You can remove the paint on these wood furniture and re-paint them … but that looks hard, right? Only experts can do that, right? What if I told you that you can do it with a few tools and the cost will be minimal.
All you need to have is a good quality heat gun, LVLP spray gun, and a putty knife. That’s it. Most of the people have these tools laying around their house because they can be used for different things as well. But how can they be used to re-paint your wood furniture?
Let me tell you how …
How to use the heat gun to remove paint?
First of all, this step is not that necessary. You can totally skip this process and still get a good color quality on your furniture. I only do it just to make sure that I will get a really high-quality color on my furniture.
As I have mentioned it earlier you need a quality heat gun in order to make this work. Why? Well, because it will take a few hours to remove paint from a single furniture, and low-quality ones can’t handle the work.
Power up your heat gun and get a putty knife. Use your strong hand to hold the heat gun and with the other hand hold the putty knife. Now since heat guns can blow up to 1000 degree hot air it is recommended to use safety gears. After you are set up and you have left the heat gun to heat a little, start directing the hot air to the old wood furniture. Keep the heat gun 4 or 5 inches away from the furniture and try to move it around every 2 or 3 seconds.
While moving the heat gun around with one hand, with the other hand try to scrape the color with your putty knife. Now, this is a long process and it will take a long time depending on how big your furniture is, but in the end, you won’t regret it.
Remember: There are sensitive objects, there are objects with windows which can be cracked by heat, so always try to read your heat gun manual on how to protect these kinds of objects, and if you don’t have a manual then make sure to read about it on google.
After you are done removing the paint from furniture, you are also done with the heat gun and putty knife. Now comes the easy part but the most sensitive part as well, spraying your wood furniture.
How to spray your furniture using LVLP spray gun?
You can use different kinds of spray guns for this process. I like to use LVLP spray guns because they are cheaper and their finish color quality is really good.
If it’s your first time using spray guns I recommend to make some tests on “dummy” objects. In other words, make some tests on some objects that you don’t need, just to try the color quality and the pressure.
Before starting to do your job with spray guns make sure you get a really good color. Get a color you always wanted for your furniture or even get the same color that it had. Make sure you like the color before spraying it out because if you don’t you will have to do the process all over again.
After getting the color, put it on the air cup and mix it with water. You have to check the manual of your spray gun to know how much water and pressure the spray gun needs in order to have a quality color. After you are all done setting the spray gun, start spraying your wood furniture.
Sometimes in order to get a really quality color for your furniture, you have to make 2 or even 3 layers of color. So if you decide to make more than one layer make sure to wait for the color to dry after each layer before adding the next one.
