Is your toilet water line leaking and needs to be replaced? You can always call an expert to repipe your water supply line. However, if you want to do it by yourself, here is what you should keep in mind. Replacing toilet water line involves six primary steps and a few basic items.

Items that you will need for a DIY toilet water line replacement

Before you try replacing the faulty water line, keep the following at hand.

  • Rags or towels
  • Adjustable wrench
  • A new flexible supply line

Steps that you need to follow

While a complete plumbing remodel may be a tricky ask, replacing a water line is fairly simple. The entire process of replacing the toilet water line is based on six steps. As long as you follow the instructions correctly, you should be good.

1. Turn off the water supply

Use the shutoff valve to stop water from flowing into the affected supply line. You will need to turn the knob on the water supply valve clockwise to stop the flow. Make sure to turn it off completely before attempting the next steps.

2.  Flush the toilet

You need to empty the tank before you remove the faulty supply line. To do this, first, you must flush the toilet a couple of times. Then use a rag or a towel to soak the remaining water from the tank.

3. Remove the faulty water line

Check the supply line for a nut that connects to the valve. You need to use a wrench to loosen this nut. Then look for a similar nut that connects to the fill valve of the toilet. Use the wrench to loosen this too. Now try and remove the faulty water line. Use another towel or rag to soak water that may drip out of the old pipe.

Hand tighten the white-colored plastic nut to the nipple of the fill valve. You will find the toilet fill valve nipple under the tank. Be careful while tightening the nut to avoid damaging the new set. Once this connection is fixed, secure the metal nut to the main supply valve.

5. Turn on the water supply

Turn the supply valve’s knob counter-clockwise to turn on the water supply. Once water starts flowing back into the toilet tank, start checking for leaks.

6. Check for leaks

This is the final and most important step. Make sure that the water flow is smooth through the new supply line without any leakage. Please remember to check the joints of the plastic nut and the metal nut carefully. If you find water leaking from any of these joints, try tightening the nuts. You can use the wrench on the metal nut if needed, but stick to the hand tight philosophy for the plastic one.

Now that you know the major steps involved in replacing toilet water line, you may want to give it a try. However, be extra careful while handling the wrench and removing the faulty pipe. A small careless move on your part can lead to a serious accident.

Safety first

Also, remember to clean the washroom floor once you are done replacing the supply line. If you have kids and pets at home, ensure that they stay away from the action zone. Look out for any loose nuts or screws that you may have left on the floor while working. The final must-do in this regard is to dispose off the faulty supply line in a safe place.
