Whole house generators allow us to stay indoors when weather conditions are not favorable outside.  These days we can communicate with people at the other end of the world while walking our pets or use social media to tell our friends what we are up to. We post vacation images on Instagram to tell people where we are and how we enjoy our time. We are well connected to others on the planet all thanks to modern internet technologies.

Emergency Situation

All this is however not possible if we are struck by a storm or a hurricane. A natural calamity can cut the supply of grid power and in a short span of time when the batteries of your communication devices go dead we get cut off from the rest of the world.  There are many businesses that rely on international communications. Some have large data centers that depend on a constant supply of electricity. At times of a power failure caused by storms, they use a backup supply of power to continue operations seamlessly.

The storms and hurricanes can be of any size and shape. They can have a high or a less intensity which at times is difficult for the met department to predict. Small tornadoes may just damage a few houses while the larger ones can damage large areas of the city and cause billions in damages.

The kind of storm that can be more damaging for modern internet technologies is the solar storm. These storms are not that frequent and can come every 11 years when the magnetic field of the sun turns over. When the two poles of the sun flip, it spurts more radiation into space that can hit any planet. These bursts have missed our planet for the past century and a half, but there are chances that can never be ignored.

In 1859, when such a storm-impacted planet Earth, it damaged the communication systems which in those days was based on telegraph wires. Buildings got destroyed by fire and if we get hit by such a storm today the damage can run into billions and trillions of dollars as it would damage our satellite systems and destroy the grid system for many countries. In such a scenario, the governments will not be able to extend much help quickly and can fail due to lack of communication and coordination.

Precautions

Both governments and people, in general, need to prepare themselves for the unknown. Everyone needs to be well-prepared for a natural calamity. Or you can go and live with friends and relatives that are in a safe area. Going out camping at safe sites is not a bad idea. All you will need is survival gear and the essentials along with food supplies and water. In the wilderness, you can learn how to live without electricity in the wonderful world that we live in. If the storm is not a solar storm you can carry your generator with you and use your cell phone tablets, laptops, cameras, coffee pots, cookers, lights, and fans.  If you plan to go out RV camping, the generator will keep all in the party comfortable. It can be used for cooling and heating besides powering all other appliances.

A trip out in the wilderness will recharge your souls and reboot your brains. The fresh air will clean out the lungs and you can be more productive when you return back to city life. Honing your survival skills will do you good in the long run. There are many RV generators that you can find online to choose from.  Some online shops offer to finance as well, so get the best possible unit for your RV.

When you hear about a hurricane in the making, look at its path and imagine what’s coming your way. Get ready for winds up to 200 miles per hours, trees getting ripped and power lines falling. Even if you want to go out, you will not be able to as it is very dangerous to do so. Keep indoors, safe from the disaster. Installing a whole house generator will allow the entire family to spend their time at home.

Watch TV and listen to the radio to keep yourself updated. All the planning for the hurricane should be taken care of ahead of time, so there is no rushing at the last minute. Get all the things and foodstuff required to spend a few days indoors. Prepare a hurricane kit and ride out the storm at home.

If you do not have the money to buy a generator and if the upcoming storm is a Category 4, it is wise to look up a map of the area to find a safe place for yourself and your family. Be totally out of the danger zone before the calamity strikes. At such times the cell phone signals may be weak so keep the paper maps handy in case you cannot check Google Maps. Using a hand crank radio will allow you to listen to the latest updates on the storm.

Buy and pack a gallon of water per person per day and if the weather is hot and humid buy some more. In your hurricane kit, include a lot of antiseptic wipes. Put together a first aid kit and include the water purification tablets in it. Carry the valuable papers and jewelry and put it in a safe deposit box in the bank before you leave the house. If looters break in, you will be at a big loss. Buying a generator to power up a security alarm system and a surveillance camera is a good idea. This way you can get some footage of the incident that will help the police find the culprits.
